I agree, that sounds good - flexible. Is it per application, or per
instance? - e.g., I have two gps icons for tangogps, one set for walking
and one for the car which control different screen rotations and
different resource allocations. 

Not sure how its going to be imnplemented, but rather than have another
set of config files, perhaps add its functionality to the desktop icon
files? (e.g., currently I have them calling scripts to set the
environment before starting the app)
