Are you sure this is a filesystem compiled for armv4/armv5 with soft-floats (ping seems to choke on an stc, which is an access to a co-processor, so likely some FPU)? Would you have the unstripped binaries corresponding to this rootfs? Something like the staging dir. I am trying to reproduce the problem with python + dbus, but it seems to require a display, trying to use my desktop as display.
