Hi there,

After getting my new (2nd hand) freerunner back from the lovely
people at Golden Delicious, buzz-fixed and ready for action, I put
the latest (downloaded yesterday - 17 Jan) shr-testing (lite) image
onto it. I had spent a few days with an shr-unstable image before
xmas, but am still nice and new to the scene.

First, I have to say, I'm really impressed and happy with it -
thanks so much to everyone who has worked on it, it's looking really
nice now.

I made notes while I was trying it out last night of little things
which I think can be polished before the stable release. I'm very
happy to open bugs for these, but wanted to post them to the list
first, as I'm new here. There are lots of them, but only because I'm
being thorough and pedantic - overall I'm really impressed at the
quality of it all.

The first two options that pop up after install, to choose language
and choose profile, only had one option each (US English and
Illume-SHR). It would be nice if the choice questions only came up
if there were more options, and if not the only available options
were automatically chosen.

Also, the illume-shr profile description horizontally scrolled,
which was rather ugly. Either it should wrap properly to the space
it has, or the containing box should be widened.

I really liked the first time wizard. A few little things here too:

When choosing local number settings, it would make sense to have a
numerical keyboard appear by default (rather than one without any
numbers on at all). Indeed, if possible this would be nice for any
form that expects a number (eg places in settings).

It also wasn't obvious that the number settings box was scrollable.
I think it would make sense to have vertical scrollbars there.

About 2 minutes after shr had started up, a warning dialogue
appeared to tell me that I had no space left for messages. My SIM
was full, so this is true, though I had presumed that extra messages
would be saved on the phone. I went into the messages application,
but was slightly worried to find it empty. A few minutes later (once
the SIM had been read, I'm sure) everything was there, but it would
be nice to have a (loading from sim...) notice in the messages and
contacts applications, to reduce fear.

I then tried the "GPS & M..." option. It would be nice if it was
renamed so the whole name was visible on a default install. Maybe
just GPS or Maps. The tangogps screen remained mostly white, I
presume because it failed to connect to any satallite (which is
fine, I don't care about it). But it would be much nicer to show a
message like 'searching for gps satallite', than show a plain white
screen. The lack of any map could also be because I'm using the lite
image - if so a message like 'map not available, install a map pack'
would be nice.

Then I went to settings, to set the correct time. I love the
interface for this, but after I had set it and pressed 'OK', the
time in the date/time application showed '00:00' for a second or two
before showing the correct time. Which was jarring.

A few other even smaller things:

- In the dialer application, it would be nice if 'Click to open
contactlist' was phrased 'Touch to open contact list'.
- With the default gry theme, icons look really bad with a black
background, as the text titles have a white border. This is not a
problem with the illume-shr theme which I'm now using.
- In shr-today, left of the network name ('Orange'), there's a *,
and a circle with a cross through it, which appears to mean
'network unavailable.' However it is, as is shown correctly on the
regular taskbar at the top right.

But overall I'm super-impressed. May have already mentioned that. :)
I'm really excited about a stable release soon, and love the new
trac mock-up home page (one comment there: a more direct link to the
blog would be good).

Thanks,

Nick
