such a pain to change & keep changed.

This annoys me too.
... It is the insane defaults that annoy me and the fact that
you cannot save the settings from the GUI.
It looks insane to 2 and ok to 50 others.
Previous messages going back 3 months show you can add at least Tim
Abell, Bill Kenworthy, Tom Hacohen and me variously calling it insane,
annoying, dumb, stupid; as far as I can see, nobody else thinks it's OK.
But even if people generally don't mind the current value, that doesn't
mean they'd be against a longer timeout, whereas the current value is
really annoying to some (me included). Given that we can't yet easily
save our preferred setting, it seems like such a trivial thing to change
the default that would make (at least) 6 people happier.
