sorry, don't know about limitations of u-boot from 2008, I'm using Qi
for few years already...

no you're booting kernel from mmcblk0p1 (uImage) with rootfs set to
mmcblk0p2 (first and second partition on first - only uSD). See bootargs
for right menu entry...

Some cards need longer rootdelay as you have tried (with this kernel you
can also use rootwait). Some cards need different clock see 
https://docs.openmoko.org/trac/ticket/1743
but don't know if this is the case.. make sure you have right partition
type set and that filesystem there is really ext2 not ie ext4.
