prop-162-v001: WHOIS Privacy
I would support this proposal as written but I would like to propose an
enhancement.
4. Proposed policy solution
--------------------------------
APNIC should remove all email addresses, telephone numbers, and
physical addresses from any bulk WHOIS data, and should cause any
existing re-publishers of APNIC WHOIS data to remove this information
from the Internet as a condition for continued access to data.
Resource holders should have the option to list different data for bulk
access. In other words:
Option 1: do not include any data with bulk access (default)
Option 2: list (eg) [email protected] for bulk access
This would allow operators to determine whether their data have been
harvested from bulk access or from other WHOIS services that ought to
prevent such harvesting. In turn, this would help APNIC assess whether
protections are effective. (APNIC could also put in canary/trap data to
proactively detect misuse of bulk data access.)
I can't imagine any operators would opt in to including their unmodified
data in bulk access, but that could be a third option.
6. Impact on resource holders
-----------------------------------
No impact on resource holders.
Except -- hopefully -- less marketing for the NOC...?
