i've had real spotty success with dvd read/css libs.  it's really a
function of the decoding library and the player you're trying to use.
i've had the most luck with VLC and (http://www.videolan.org/) Mplayer
(http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/) -- so check those out and make
sure you get all their deps.

i initially had issues with not having read access to the device and
not having a /dev/dvd link but sounds like you've already addressed
those issues.
