first off, for those who have not heard of or tried staroffice 5.0, a little
background:

staroffice is a free-for-personal-use office suite that runs on linux, and
claims & appears to be office97-compatible! (i've read in semicomplex
word97 docs, as well as powerpoint docs). it's a bit of a pig, but not as
much so as office97 (65MB download, ~130MB disk used by the install).

it comes from http://www.stardivision.com, which you will need to visit to
get a (free) registration key. (under personal-edition-for-linux -> download)

i've only just busted it out, but initial signs look VERY good, and i didn't
want anyone else to have to suffer a slow download from mit or overseas.

grab it (remember, it's 65MB) from:

ftp://acm.csres.utexas.edu/pub/siglinux/so50_01.tar

(and lindsay, it's got an html editor...dunnao anything about it tho cos
i for one care squat about the web).

peace.
