Time warner is "thinking" about austin and cable modems. They say they
plan on starting it "within the next year". I have to say this:
CABLE modems ROCK. at least the ones i have used in other cities. El
Paso got it first since they had upgraded to fiber first and have a small
startup cost comparable to Austin. Call Time Warner and ask them for it.
Bug them a little... the more we ask, the quicker it will come. BTW, the
cost is about 38 dollars/month if you have cable already and add 9 bucks a
month if you dont have cable.
With cable modems you share the total bandwidth with your neighbors on the
same switch, but if everyone is using it its throughput is still better
than ISDN and better than ADSL (currently).
Austin isnt completely fiber yet, the Riverside area (and surrounding
area) is still old cable, but they are putting the lines in as we speak
(at least on Wickersham, they been at it for a week).
