The tulip-based cards seem to be popular with the Linux crowd, as well
as (with a tip of the hat to our other thread) the intel 100mbs
cards).  Personally I hate intel network hardware, so I would 
second the recomendation for a dec tulip card of some type.

I would NOT recommend anything from 3com.. I've had too many bad 
experiences with them.

Also, for the very cheap, you can't beat a good ole' 10mbps NE2000
compatible card.  I've never had a problem with one, though there
are a couple of vendors to watch out for (cf. the ethernet 
howto).
