If you are a UT student, you have access to public SunOS, AIX, and
DIGITAL unix machines. Plus if you own a pc, you could install linux and
your favorite BSD. That's five different platforms right there. You can
check 5 different man pages and learn what's different very quickly by
trying stuff out.
Also, the Linux and BSD man pages are really good about giving
portability hints.
