While low-level UNIX socket programming can be intimidating, it is
still a useful thing to know. That said, you might want to check out
the Java stuff for a first idea.. It can be a lot cleaner (I have
never built Java network code, but I've seen some).
The whole socket stuff isn't intractibly bad.
