This sounds like an ideal project for a student organization whose goal
is to further the use of a particular operating system. Who wants to
organize the project.
Some major things to do are:
1) to find out the current state of printer <-> application interfacing
2) become familar with formats (e.g. postscript, ghostscipt etc.)
3) see if this wouldn't be duplicating efforts going on elsewhere
