I've been spending a lot of time in the CS labs recently, and every time
I start X I wish for a better desktop. So when I saw the big announcement
earlier today (yesterday?), I managed to find a non-slashdotted mirror
and get the GNOME 1.0 tarballs. I've gotten all the prerequisite stuff
compiled and installed in my home directory (gotta set that
LD_LIBRARY_PATH).

But gnome-libs has problems. It compiles fine, but all the binaries that
it builds just segfault. make install doesn't work because it calls
gnome-gen-mimewhatever which segfaults and stops make dead in its tracks.
make check reports 5 out of 5 failures.

So is there anybody else out there who cares about trying to get GNOME
running on the CS machines? Maybe we can work together.

The tarballs and my attempts to build them are in copperhead:/tmp/wesf if
you want to take a look or just save some download time...
