Dell in general does not have that much proprietary stuff. The laptops I
played on were all S3 video cards. You need to find out exactly what the
ones you are looking have in them. I have found in general that the video
card is the only thing that will make a difference. The PCMCIA bus is
normally standard, (IE: I don't know of any 'windows only' PCMCIA buses as
of yet) and everything else (keyboard, mouse) is usually PS/2.
Compaq's have chosen to go to the neomagik video cards .. and I must say .
they SUCK. Do NOT buy a (newer) compaq if you plan to put linux on it. X
will not work, not matter what is done.
