I had the same problem on my box- I fought with it forever but it simply could
not pick up my super generra wal-mart (well chipsmart actually) network card.
It took a recompile of the kernel before I got my nic to work- and this of
course required installing it first- I would recommend getting it on cd or
downloading it to another partition if you have the space.  Also your nic (or
modem?) must be pcmcia- does that basic intall kernel even have pcmcia
support?   The ftp install is a nice option - but I found it more of a hassle
than its worth.
