A thing to look at may be LyX, which is basically a LaTeX
word-processor-like frontend (It goes for the ease of use that word
processors have achieved without sacrificing the power and flexibility of
LaTeX, which is the back-end processor). If your goal is to learn LaTeX,
this may not be the best approach, but if your goal is to write
professional documents easily, it may be helpful. In case you need
anything in TeX that LyX doesn't have, there's a trivial way to insert raw
LaTeX, so no power or flexibility is sacrificed (This is important to me,
even though I can only recall needing to input raw LaTeX once).

I used this before version 1.0, and found it very useful then, and work
has progressed since then, so I recommend it. Of course, you miss out on
the fun of writing a document like a program.

LyX can be found at www.lyx.org.
