via xdm/kdm:

change the last line of /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers to 
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X -bpp 32

(or 16, or 24, whichever works for your video display)

via the command line:

startx -- -bpp 32

This is the best way to test it -- xdm will fail but keep trying to start
back up if you get it wrong above.
