depends on what level you start xdm -- while it's typically 5, it doesn't
have to be.
grep xdm /etc/inittab
if the second field is 5, _and_ you know that nothing else is started in 5
that you _don't_ want to kill, then you can safely do 'init 3'.
I agree it's simpler than editing, though.
