Michael,
 Yes, you do need to include the /compressed negotiate. Also, I failed to
mention that if the ppp command is run from a script, you have to use the
parentheses, as in
> "ppp /compressed negotiate"
BTW, the above is the line exactly as it appears in my login script, right
after the password line.
