ok, safe to say it is a problem with your libXext libs.  i am a little
confused about what "I had done a hard drive install lacking X
support" means.  did you install a slack base installation without
X support or what?  also, where does accelx fit into all of this?
i don't know much about accelx, does it supply it's own x libs
or is it just an optimized x server?
i would revert everything you did with respect to installing
the xlibs and make sure that you're installing them correctly
and that there are no errors in the config logs.

that's all i can think of at the moment...keep me posted.
