I remember back in '99 when Dennis George wrote:

Not in most newer computers, in my experience.  Generally, you can get
away with using the "linear" option to LILO and things will work
pretty well.  Thta being said, I usually just make a small 5 MB /boot
partition as the first thing on my disks out of habit anyway.
