In rh 5.2, it seems to be the line IPADDR=127.0.0.1 in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-lo
Are you sure lo is being brought up during bootup? I remember having to
modify one of the init scripts b/c rh 5.2 doesn't bring up lo by
default...
