well, this is not really a font problem, but rather a afterstep problem
I decided to switch back to afterstep since gnome is too slow..
but no matter what kind of font I tried to use, afterstep would not
start and complains about can't find fonts...such as

/usr/bin/X11/afterstep: can't get font
-adobe-times-bold-r-normal--12-120-75-75-p-67-iso8859-1
Trying... -adobe-times-bold-r-normal--12-120-75-75-p-67-iso8859-1,-*--14-*
/usr/bin/X11/afterstep: can't get font fixed

using xlsfonts does show those fonts, so...any suggestion?
