XFree86 selects the best frequency from the list of ones that it
has defined in the XF86Config file. If there isn't a Modeline
(the things that defines the timings for a specific resolution
and refresh rate) for 85Hz, then it can't select it.
The solution is to plug in an 85Hz modeline--how to obtain one
is one of the more obscure things about XF86..
Here's one from my file (from a Gateway-rebadged CPD 100gf):
Modeline "1024x768" 85.00 1024 1032 1152 1360 768 784 787 823
Put it near to the other modelines in your XF86Config file and
XF86 should use it if your monitor supports the timings.
Let me know if this works or not . . As I intimated, there
are lots of tinkerings you can do with Modelines, but esentially
if you get one that works, you're OK.
