Bad IDE cables will cause DMA errors.  Folding IDE cables causes bad 
cables.  From my personal experience, I was having problems with a drive 
that would stop working with DMA after extensive use.  A replacement 
cable solved the problem.

In my experience, you really don't have to worry about heat problems or 
heat flow unless you are overclocking (my computer is currently 
underclocked).
