This art was passed down to Pendekar Steven by Sat Guru Ma Prem. Guru Ma learnt from a very young age over 18 styles of Silat from all parts of Indonesia. The vast majority of her relatives were Silat practitioners and have all perfected different styles some from West Sumatra and others from West and Central Java. The name Walisongo literally translates as 9 Saints, and Guru Ma and her family descend from one of these Wali's. All these styles were collectively named by her in honour of her family and the lineage. The main styles in the Walisongo Syllabus are the styles of the four ground arts of: Harimau (Tiger) Kucing (Cat) Buaya (Crocodile) Kura Kura (Turtle) As well as the: Garuda (Mythical Bird) Ular (Snake) The Walisongo Silat system follows a very complete and in-depth syllabus and takes between five and seven years to fully complete, let alone master. The initial stages of the syllabus start of with learning the Salutation and the four ground arts. From there many hand drills and well as lankah (footwork) are taught. After these basics, students then learn the Garak-Garik or follow follow, which is an advanced form of grappling and countering. One aspect of Walisongo Silat that makes it so effective is its Pukulan or striking aspect. Students are taught not only to strike in explosive groups of 8-12 strikes in a matter of seconds, but then this is taken up a level whereby this must be performed against multiple attackers. Training in this way develops the nervous system to a high degree, whereby reactions become automatic and precise. This aspect of training also includes the Sarang Laban Laban or Spiders Web, which develops self awareness and tactics of decoys, feinting, and drawing in. The later stages of Walisongo Silat include the Kembangan, more of which will be discussed later, use of weapons, and then the internal aspects of the art.
