A close associate runs a few iphone plays of which one is "aurora feint" - a *very* popular multiplayer iphone game. His words are "its the wild west, stake out some ground and maybe there's an oilwell there".
So the model is: - incubator funded by some angels - incubator overseen by a proven bay area entrepreneur - built by stanford grads - launch in a new segment/niche (focus, focus, focus) - worry about the marketing later but use some guerrilla tactics early for launch - treat it as a land grab and make it sticky so the next game can't steal your players I can't provide any numbers but lets just say its doing well. I don't know if they will do ad placement, on-line purchase of wands/fairy dust but you can assume that its a typical "monetise the eyeballs play". Some of these will do very nicely. Not many. In comparison to FB, you can actually bake deeply useful apps and *this segment is a new channel not a novelty*. The problem is that everyone getting laid off in the US is now doing iphone apps so the competitive landscape is diabolical. iphone and android are game changing and asia will a great market for australia to innovate for because they "get" handsets. Ignore this channel at your peril. (IMHO) There is no reason Australia couldn't innovate in this segment - its just a lack of angel/seed funding and self belief. Because we do more with less money then perhaps the path to break-even is more achievable here.
