Howdy Folks,

Ive had this in my mind for ages so figured Il put it out there. I am
sure this is nothing new but it really hit me when Dmitri and I tried to get
the bus time table information from Sydney Buses for a simple time table
service we had written (think google transit before google transit!!)... we
were aghast to find that the data behind the service was neither free ($1600
for the data) and nor open (could not be resold or provided to the public in
other services!)

There is so much data out there that should really be free and open.. A lot
of the information is available in paper format, if one can hire
investigators to go through all these paper trails and so on - this only
adds to the pain of obtaining the information... What gives? clearly the
benefits of softcopies cannot be yelled out enough..

Yes we all know about what is in it for the government in keeping the lid on
things.. But how to break down that wall?? What would it take to have a
service (web preferably) that lets us keep track of government spending down
to the dollar? atleast as a first step? Is this a fair enough "wish" or am
I just a frustrated citizen?

cheers
Sri
