Hi,

My name is Alan Whiteside.

I found out about this list (and technation.com.au etc) a week ago. I
have just returned back from overseas and it is great to see some sort
of tech startup community forming. Australia needs more of this
stuff.

Who am I ?

I am new to Melbourne (a month?). I have an extensive background in
software engineering - form LOB systems to hard core engineering, web
backend, front end, databases ( ie. not only using them, but
contributing code to them). Worked at all levels of the industry.
Things I have worked on - written early app engine (aka - early ejb) ,
worked for large multi-national database vendor on product with over U
$800M in sales a year. Created an XML Database engine. HTML editor,
worked on a workflow system, developed a content management system or
2. Love creating new technologies. Still do LOTS of coding (hate
ideas that are not proven first). Worked in small teams and large
teams. Really enjoy mentoring young engineers. Worked with some
amazing people. Have also done some business stuff here and there. I
lived in SF until end 2002. Have also spent large periods of time in
recent years in Asia. Currently working in a start up i am a co-
founder of. We are almost ready to come out of project X mode.

What am I looking for in the list ?

Looking forward to making contacts and getting to know some great
people and have those "abstract" conversations and dreamings only
people who are into developing tech can have.
Want to help more people get the business of software. That there is
even such a thing as a business of software and that It is a good
one. Its a big one, and personally it would be great if more
Australians (especially those doing some sort of IT/Computer Science/
Engineer at Uni) could realise that 2 people in a garage , with just
and idea and some luck can do something very cool that can become very
big.

Alan.
