If I was not the moral, upstanding citizen that I am, I might approach
a vendor in the "application life-cycle managment" space, pose as a
customer, ask them about their market share and then cut that figure
by 50%. I might also get a Gartner/Forrester analyst drunk (they are
all lightweights so this is a reasonably cheap move) and ask them the
same question or approach a friend at a large IT firm with access to
their reports and ask them to slip me something in a brownpaper email.
I could also ask an IT manager at a corporate and ask them to tell me
who the main players are and what they think of them.

Not that I would do any of those things.

It all depends on what you want that data for.
