+1 on both Jeromy's and Geoff comments. I think at the end of the day you should also do what you feel comfortable at. I strongly believe you can make money anywhere in stocks, property, startup, service business, retail and even franchises if you own enough of them :) It all depends what you do with you time learning about the market, industry, trends so that you see the opportunity to exploit it. They says it take 10000 hours to become an expert in a field. Look at the pro's and con's what do you feel most comfortable with and become an expert so that you can know your market better than anyone else.
Some people want to raise money and try hit a home run of tens of millions but there is nothing wrong with $1million. Yes in the startup world service business are generally only as scalable as the number of people you hire which clear lyis more difficult than just adding more servers but you can still make a decent amount of money and retire young and happy. Just do a very basic SWOT analysis of your skills, desires, interests, wants and plan for your future. Then see which model best suits you. Who knows you can might have a bit of both like Buzznumbers.com.au They have SaaS software but also have a small consulting touch that increases their value. Essentially its all up to you mate. Also in terms of reading add Steven Gary Blanks book Four Steps to Epiphany and Geoffrey Moore Crossing the Chasm and always read Mark Suster his stuff is awesome!
