A few thoughts on some of the common reasons already provided, from my own perspective.
Time 'Richness': I call it time freedom. It isn't that you want lots of empty time with nothing to do, it is that you want to be in control of your time. And you don't have to a millionaire for that to happen. Just maintaining a cash flow in your on business is enough to manage that (if you construct your business well enough at least). I enoy being able to sleep in whenever I want. Being able to stay up to 4am working if i feel like it, or able to go away for a week without any fear of losing my job. To be in control of your own life, in the most meaningful way is a very very powerful concept for me. To Be Rich: Anyone who denies the atractivenes of this simply hasn't understood he value of financial freedom yet. It isn't about the money - money is just a contract, an imagining, a representation of value - it is what you can use that money for that matters. I must admit, I do often find it disappointing to see what the extremely wealthy waste their money on. I hope that when I find myself with my hundreds of millions (it is just a matter of time now ;) I don't get sucked in to the trap of wasting my money on pointless brand related image related overly commercialised products and services. There is too much in our world which money could be really effectively used on to make a difference. Personally I am interested in lifespan extension research, so funding that, helping labs, helping researchers, helping that community is a large passion of mine. And with that comes the general improvement of all health related medical science - particularly concentating on cancer research. To Change the World: I didn't get in to my startup to do this, but I think it has become my primary reason. As my idea has grown and mutated in to its current form, I am so excite about my vision, that the money has become an almost irrelevent component to me. I can't wait to see the world in 5 or 10 years time, when my website is just a part of every discussion and oganisation of outdoor activities. That is incredibly exciting.
