How much does a programmer work for per hour?

Who will do this for as little as $5?

How about I copy the code and integrate it with others.

And then launch the startup with a cashflow.

No copyright issues either.

Hmmmmm.

Graphic Designers go to university or college for years to attain their
skills. Not unlike a Computer Science Degree.

Subject: Re: [SiliconBeach] super quick perl jobs

You can request "gigs" - So you can ask for jobs done. The field is in the
right hand side column. There are some programming related ones, but of
course, very simplistic. Most common ones I've seen are along the lines of
"I will fix any problem you have in wordpress for $5" or stuff like that.

Also, I need to get a business card finally designed, so I have decided to
fire 3 or 4 different people of Fiverr to do it for me, and that way I can
either pick the best one, or take the best elements from each, and then
rehire the best to put them all together. Total cost $25 for a professional
design?

@jason: sorry to hear of your imminent doom, but perhaps i have a partner in
crime now :)

@shane: absolutely love the logo... and what a superb way to go about
things... get something done quick (like your logo) and look at maybe
getting a better one done as time progresses... (although in this case, i
agree with your business partner... that logo is fantastic)

Love the fiverr sites as well... what a fantastic site... and i'm blown away
by looking at what people are willing to do for a fiver :)

"super quick perl jobs" definitely won't be anything that cheap :) and
because it's programming and very technical, and i'll needs to be built to
fill a very specific need... that said, i don't anticipate any "super quick"
job taking longer than a day... and over time automating some of the
processes like packaging for delivery (tarballs with auto generated docs in
them), invoicing etc...

logo's as you've described are perfect for the 5ver site because the results
are completely subjective... with programming, if the result of 2+2 needs to
come out as 4, and you print 5... saying "but i like 5 more" ain't gonna cut
it... :)

on the fiverr site though, i can't see a place where you can say you want
something specific done for $5... you can only chose from what people have
put up...

After spending hundred(s) in the past to get logos designed through Elance -
taking days at a time, and regular back and forth where I tried to
communicate my own poor idea of what it was that I wanted with a designer
who didn't understand what I said anyway, I am not sure I will ever go back
from my recent experience on Fiverr.com.

I paid $5, answered 6 questions, and got a logo. It probably wasn't the best
logo ever designed, but it met my specifications, took all stress off me (no
trying to explain and no repeated back and forth) and did the job. The time
and money saved was huge. I intended to have it redesigned when I launched
the next stage of this project, but my partner loves it and won't let me
have it redesigned now...

Perhaps this approach is not advisable for your next multi-million
reputation based business, but it was perfect for this digital product
launch. You can see the logo at the top of the page:
http://travellerstrade.com/
- total cost $5 USD.
- Effort required, less than 5 minutes in total.

Fiverr is great for small outsourcable jobs.

Love it. You'll probably never buy a Ferrari off the back of it, but this
kind of "small, quick, cheap" model definitely has its place, and probably
some lessons that everyone can learn

Also I really miss writing Perl... ah...[wistful look]

Sorely tempted to write all of my next project's glue code in perl now.
You've doomed me.

hi all,

we often talk about innovating big, changing the world, disruption of the
current process/model...

however, this morning i had a dream (not quite "martin luther king" style)
but an "electric sheep" style... and here's the events of part of my day
today:

* dreamt - "people were asking me to make changes to their perl scripts"

* woke up, in the shower thought of "hey, yeah! often people ask me to make
little changes, and perl was something that virtually 'powered' the
internet, so there is a lot of it out there, so why not let people make
slight changes to what already works for them" - not everyone is ready for a
revolution...

* created a basic site (my design skills have a lot to be desired for) which
reflects the "retro" style... and is very "to the point" (it's a one page
site)

* registered superQuickPerlJobs.com via dyndns.org (expensive but very
reliable, have been using them for over 10 years for
domain/dns/mail-forwarding etc)

* put the site up on my ec2 server (have had a ubuntu server there for about
4+ years) that i do various experiments on

* sent it to a few friends and submitted it to search engines...

bob's my uncle i thought... i'm done with this for the day... but from a few
FOAF's (who got that link) i got 3 separate requests, two to modify scripts
they already have and in one case, a file that needed some computation and
parsing - so was busy for the next 2-3 hours again :)

i doubt that my rate of getting work will be that great... but the initial
feedback undoubtedly was that my FOAF's had found it very hard to get a
"small job done" - of course there is odesk etc... but they found the
registration process and creating a project, getting bids etc a bit too
daunting... they just wanted some parsing or changes to a script they
already had... they saw my site, and thought... excellent... specialised in
perl, here's an email and a phone number... and sure enough, 5 minutes
later, they had described the work to me without having to jump through
hoops...

to come back to the point, i wonder if there are more opportunities than
most anticipate in the "specialised little jobs" ... sites like odesk etc
are making more complex things possible, but not keeping "simple things
simple" - and i simply borrowed from Larry Wall's philosophy... "keep simple
things simple, make complex things possible"...

all in all, a profitable day... dare i say, a startup that was profitable in
the first day (the day it went from inception to launch :)

(can't say that with any ego, because i know there are people out that that
replicate things like siri in 8 hours... "iris on android" - case in point!)

skills :) http://superQuickPerlJobs.com/
