I'll happily declare that I'm mostly crap.

But if I finish up today being a little less crap than yesterday then it has
been a good day.

I readily admit that I don't know, what I don't know.

But if at the end of today, I know a little more than I did yesterday than
it has been an even better day.

Subject: [SiliconBeach] Humility... :)

Looking at this mailing list and other IT ones, i'm noticing a trend (maybe
it's perceived; but it tickles a pet peeve, and wanted to share it, and
happy to hear others thoughts and alter my perception of it :)

I'm noticing that a lot of people in technology (especially those at the
"business end" of technology, and sometimes, even the shy sys-admin's that
prefer it in their dungeons) like to state how good they are! Statements
made by people about themselves like "i've got a lot to contribute", "i've
gained so much, now i want to give back", "i want to give back", "i'm really
good at what i do", "i'm an expert in" - to come come across as "self
marketing" and for want of a better word, arrogant! (it other people say
that about you, it's brilliant, but claiming it about yourself, or
reaffirming it yourself is arrogant, isn't it?)

They assume a self-importance, holier than thou, i know better than you,
that i cringe at every time i read it!

Sometimes, the system promotes people as such, for example, many programs
have "mentors" (i'm guilty of registering as a "mentor" in numerous programs
myself) - but the way i look at it, there is so much to learn, and i'd love
to collaborate with people and hopefully between everyone throwing around
different ideas and experiences, something good will be born/done. Words
like "mentors" imply a person that (in our context) mostly startup
entrepreneurs "look up to" - and i think the world belongs to
entrepreneurs's, not mentors! Entrepreneurs's are the ones that come with
the enthusiasm, the "will to do", the necessary "lack of 'i've done that
before' experience" that is almost necessary to them succeeding.

I'm probably the pot calling the kettle black, so this email causes self
reflection more than anything, but the amount of times i've cringed at "self
promotion" reading SB email's in particular made me put these thoughts down!
Last time i checked, humility was still a virtue.. hopefully i'll imbibe it
one day myself :)
