Reminds me of why in Fortune500 companies, the management ladder is 
(usually) better compensated for than technical ladders. Because it is the 
finance/management souls that determine the compensation, they have a very 
highly developed sense of their own worth. 

Of course, when things management, they also get the flak. As Scott (of SUN 
fame) points out, the difference between paying for a Sun version compared 
with an open-source DIY solution is that his  comes with a direct dial to 
his mobile. Quite a few backroom boys have come back as "consultants" (see 
Y2000).
