Hey Craig,

Good luck with Griffin. Anything that helps more Aussie startups get up and
running is a good thing.

>From an outsider looking in though, there are two things that stick out that
>make Griffin look less attractive than competing accelerators like Startmate,
>Innovyz, Muru-D and Slingshot. Or YC or Techstars for that matter.

1. The valuation. $50k for 15% is not a great valuation. Startmate takes half
the equity and includes an investor roadshow in the US. So from the outside it
looks expensive relative to the value provided.

2. The mentors. Phil has a point. The mentor list appears to be very heavy on
academics and public servants and light on actual entrepreneurs who have
started a software or hardware product business and taken it to a successful
exit.

Maybe I'm wrong, or maybe the mentor biographies do not emphasise
entrepreneurial experience.

The point is, perceptions matter, and you've now had two people specifically
mention the mentors as a potential problem.

I don't in any way mean to rubbish those mentors as undoubtedly they are all
very intelligent and generous people. I have a great deal of time and respect
for Hamish in particular.

But I think that if you want to focus on lightweight software products like
traditional accelerators, you may need to shuffle the decks a bit. I think your
current mentor roster would be much better suited to an accelerator focusing on
spinning out uni research and training academics to be entrepreneurs.

Just my 2 cents anyway. And I mean this as constructive feedback only, I like
the fact that you're actually doing something instead of talking about it.
