Here is my take on it. Everyone is a coach and a mentor, one of the great personal gratification, is that people want to give their thoughts and be heard, even if they know nothing about it.
So you need to be coachable, and open to the possibility that anyone can coach you. The really good people who know how to coach, are either taking cash, too busy building something to coach you or highly selective. However when you demostrate your coachability, nuggets of wisdom come from a lot of people. When a group of friends start sharing with you the wisdom that works for you, find out from them where they learnt it from. You will often find there is a very powerful or wise individual around them, that you would normally miss. You should also learn to be generous to others, because then others are generous to you in return. Leaders appreciate people who are generous and being leaders themselves. My personal story, was that I was cold called by a lady trying to sell me startup training, and I politely refused, She told me that she was new in the country and needed help, and I choose to help her. 18 months later, she got me an invite to meet Richard Branson and now one of his friends is someone I call a mentor. Great Mentors will come to you from Great virtues you do. You do not need to be a great businessman to get a great Mentor. Different Mentors are attracted to different Mentees, partly by your business, but more importantly by the virtues you choose to display in life. Mine is Kindness and Genrousity, and in return, All my mentors are kind and generous to me as well, and it leads to a network of kind and generous people who have helped me forward. Another person I know offered to waive nearly $120k in coaching and support, because the business I am working on answers to the virtues he is pursing in his life and his aspirations beyond money. He is paid on equity commission on how he helps me find investment, not for his coaching. So my one liner advice "Be the Mentor you want to be, and by living through to your virtues and values, your Mentor will come to you."
