My border router is a NetBSD virtual machine, talking PPPoE to the ISP's network terminating equipment, so the external IP is present on my machine - and it does the outgoing NAT and incoming forwarding of connections to the appropriate VMs for different services (I try to split things between VMs to reduce the scope of a breach, and to make it easy to upgrade things separately) - but yes, I agree! :-)
