i've been playing around with pulseaudio and the gui pulseaudio device chooser.
it mixes the sound output of any application running that's playing sound; let's you set the volume controls for a particular application; and remembers that for the future. so you can have your music loud, your mouseclicks soft, your skype ring even louder. pretty cool! -r
