I think this is misinterpretation by overanalysis. Ascribing intention to a
crowd can only result in comical fallacies.

Sure. However, one can certainly ascribe intention to individuals writing spirited articles of support for the goals of the crowd's leader.

If a staduim full of supporters watch their team lose one could assume that
they all came to do just that, that is, to watch their team lose.  Showing
support to a cause or a team or a person representing a cause does not
necessarily translate to suporting the end result.


This analogy doesn't quite work. A better one would be: showing up to a cricket match hoping that the end result is world peace and free gulab jamuns for all. Even if your team wins, at best you leave confused and hungry.
