As with most choices of this nature, the correct answer is "it
depends". Specifically, it depends on the use cases that apply to you.
Browsing while away from the computer is not significantly different,
though the cheaper devices are a bit slower all round. If you're the
kind who notices the milliseconds, you'll probably be unhappy with
cheaper devices. I don't like backlit devices for extended reading,
they all hurt my eyes, but YMMV.

Just to tack on, it also depends on the content you're reading. I find reading
academic papers (double columns) egregious on anything other than a 10" tablet.
And I only own a 7" one personally, so trust me, I've tried. Now if you want
fiction, I've read a number of nicely formatted novels on my nook colour, with
one central column.

The major negative against a Kindle is the fact that it is pretty much
a one-trick pony. The trend toward multipurpose devices could turn
e-Ink readers into a dead end in the long term, but for now, it's the
best reading platform that I have at my disposal.

As with eink needing to expand its repertoire, perhaps. I don't think I would
recommend it for anything other than a emergency web browser. Trying to do
slashdot or Reddit when the mood strikes you can't be comfortable.
