I imagine that oxidation occurs. But we don't know if the color
changes are caused by the chemical state of the particles' surfaces
or whether clumping (floculation) causes the particle size to change,
resulting in different optical absorption characteristics. Whether
clumping, oxidation, or whatever, makes the silver less active in
actual use is hard to know.

When you splash it around, you're giving it an opportunity to clump,
you're exposing it to light, as well, and who knows what else that
might affect it.

For all the worrying we do about the details, isn't it wonderful that
the stuff seems to work pretty good anyway? <grin>

Be well,

Mike D.
