The readings of this can indicate unwanted materials in a solution or in many cases, the desired materials in the solution.

In a nutrient solution, it will read the total of all items added, but the original impurities in the water.

You can buy an EC meter and start measuring this value of your distilled water to get a good idea of the quality.
