Mules and donkeys aren't used in war because they're too smart to go
on a battlefield

I beg to differ;
My father -in - law was in WW1 and was bringing up shells for the big guns,
leading a loaded horse and a mule.
An enemy shell came in a blew the horse and the mule up.He came to in a
shell hole with the dead horse on top of him and the mule completely
obliterated.He was in hospital for approx 6 months with shell shock and
trench foot.
I had two uncles over there too and they said that mules were used but could
be stubborn at times,
My uncles started out in the cavalry.
