Mary Ann, I am so very sorry to hear that your bother is suffering so. I am praying for his full return to good health in spirit, soul and body including thoughts and emotions.
When the news about the statins appeared It fits in with a rather odd twist with personal hubby experience. Health care provider had wanted hubby on statins for years because of high cholesterol and family history although his is clear of any detectable cardiac disease thus far at age 60. We resisted medication in statin form because of working his lipid panel values through some formulas I found online that showed because of his super good HDL scores, his cholesterol really was not a health problem. Of course the doc disagreed. Then I read a book on Hypothyroidism Type 2 by Mark Starr MD. In it he tells how less than optimal thyroid hormone tissue ( as opposed to circulating blood serum) levels can lead to a myriad of cascading symptoms including to high cholesterol, hyperglycemia and then diabetes, low body temperature, brain fog, repeated infections, lack of proper digestion related to low body temperature rendering many enzymatic processes in the body inactive, weight gain, dry skin, brittle nails and thinning hair, depression, malnutrition even with healthy dietary habits, poor eyesight, coordination etc etc etc. I loaned my book and cannot remember all the thyroid related issues and symptoms. One of the very impressive simple self tests he mentions proved his theory about this particular office or home test to me. First pinch the skin on the back of your hand and notice that all you get is skin to gently rub back and forth against itself. Now try to pinch just skin on the upper outer arm. If you can pinch skin only it is obvious and there is probably not a hypothyroid condition in progress. If, however, you pinch skin and an inch or two of underlying flesh and cannot pinch just skin by itself, it is indicative of myxedema which Dr Starr says is a primary diagnostic tool indicating hypothyroidism in the body tissues. If the thyroid hormone is available in the blood but not being picked up by the other cells of the body, it is a condition known as thyroid resistance. Sounds akin to insulin resistance (aka diabetes), HUH? This condition is not recognized by most endocrinologists, but very recognized by most docs who have themselves suffered thyroid resistance and found the treatment or had family members who were misdiagnosed and/or under medicated. Hubby is now on a high dose of dessicated pig Thyroid out of Canada since the American supply routes have become so contaminated. He is also on 25 mcgm of T4 -levothyroxine - but a specific generic brand which has an excellent track record and which I also take along with my Cytomel brand T3 because I have sensitized to pork thyroid. Hubby had cholesterol in 220-300 range before thyroid medication and after 6 months on present dose his cholesterol is 160 without any other medical intervention! His triglycerides were 300 and now 67. Hdl still very good and Ldl was also within normal limits although I do not recall those exact numbers. His blood sugar was 118 before thyroid medications at which time the doc said "we will wait until it hits 120 and then will put him on diabetic medicine". I hit the roof over that statement and we have not gone back to that doc who also would not treat him for hypothyroidism although he had EVERY symptom except menstrual cramps. Leon's thyroid values of Free T3 and Free T4 are now in the high normal range, he is less heat and cold intolerant and no longer sleeps in heavy wool socks in the summer, he is much less depressed, he has more energy and seems to enjoy his work and leisure so much more than before thyroid medication was begun. Leon has faithfully decreased his sweets intake, as well as cut dairy and wheat which are also implicated to cause inflammation for his blood type A. Which brings me to the coconut oil theory and proven results for many. I tried using it years ago when it was first found to be such a health boost as I had always loved anything coconut. I got so ill from one meal and something I cooked with coconut oil I almost puked and developed flu like symptoms that lasted for several days but were not the flu. All from one meal with coconut oil. I tested the foods separately and the coconut oil again later and it was definitely the coconut oil that set me off. Years later I discovered that for us blood Type A's coconut meat and oil is to be avoided because it can actually cause inflammation for us. So discovering brother's blood type and exploring healthy foods within the ones that are especially good for his blood type might help this process, at least for while he is so ill. The Eat Right 4 Your (blood) Type protocols have proven invaluable for me as I could have written the lists of foods by my own body reactions, bot positive and negative. I do understand that not everyone responds to this protocol, but hubby and I do, so it might be something to look into for brother.
