I've heard from someone that said there is an option to people to have smart
meters wired in using telephone wires...
has anyone heard of this?

Maybe if a type of shielding could be devised that does not block its
operation 24 hours a day. Maybe for a minute or 2 here and there it
would work. They might think the meter is broken instead of
suspecting the resident.
