Hi Beth,
I once mistakenly left my puppy on 'manual' and this happened after too long a 
time forgotten. Anytime I have questions about my CS, I put it in an urn for 
topical use only. Makes a good hair rinse occasionally for dandruff, etc. or 
rinse for rashes.
As for cleaning the electrodes, while they're wet, simply rub them gently with 
a dry Bounty towel, which seems to be abrasive enough without removing too much 
silver. This will bring them back to a dull gray, which works well.
