The standard reduction potential of gold is Au ---> Au+++  +3e- 1.4
volts
 or Au+ ---> Au+  + e-  1.69 volts
So you will have a gold sol. I believe this can take a little time and
you may be wise to limit the current, sounds the gold is burnt.
