Hi RaVen, MSM is 'bioavailable' sulfer; meaning that the body is able to use the sulfur in the MSM. Our body can rarely make use of vitamins, minerals, etc. independently. For example, many nutrients are fat soluble, and thus cannot be used unless they are consumed with fat. Healthy fats are essential.
MSM also seems to provide us with some DSMO, which is likely part of the reason that it is so effective at assisting other protocols. I would say that it is an easier and safer way to get minor DSMO benefits. I do not know about the safety of sulfur internally; although sulfur is well renowned for its external theraputic values (i.e. Hot Springs, sulfur baths). MSM seems like a much more valuable source of sulfur, since it has additional benefits that we probably do not fully understand. MSM seems quite safe, but should NOT be taken simultaneously with any medications, as it could magnify the effect. Of course that danger is also one of its benefits. It does require caution. I am no expert, but this is my current understanding of MSM. I have been using it only since this year.
